STM Wayfinding Signs

These informational ‘wayfinding’ signs appeared in various stations in the city of Montréal’s Metro system. Wayfinding is a professional design practice concerned with the efficient movement of large numbers of people through complex spaces. All eight signs are set in various weights and widths of the Modernist typeface Univers, designed by Adrian Frutiger and released commercially in 1957. Univers has been used throughout the system since its inception, but in 2015 the typeface FF Transit was introduced to provide more flexibility. The oldest sign, dating from the earliest days of the Metro, is at the bottom. The newest (1990s) is at the top.
