Le Club Sandwich Restaurant

Le Club Sandwich was a much-loved diner in Montreal’s Gay Village. Part of the much larger Bourbon Complex, the diner was among the last parts to close, in April 2014. The sign was designed in 1992 by Jean Bureau with orange neon laid in an open-channel. At some point it was converted to LED and fitted with a translucent plastic fascia.

The name is rendered in a classic script comparable to the MSP’s Monkland Tavern sign. While the Tavern sign is probably ‘bastard’ lettering (ie not based on a specific font), the Sandwich sign appears to be a variant of Kaufmann, designed by Max R. Kaufmann in 1936, or perhaps it’s derived from the digital redesign by Elsner Flake from 1985.

The sign is on display as of September 29, 2018. Here’s a brief news story by Billy Shields at Global News about the sign, soon after its installation:

Here are two sign inspection cards from the City of Montreal dating back to 1993 (Thanks to Steve Smith for his detective work!).
